You want more? Well, I can give you more… I do love to talk.
I’ve been blogging since 2003 — following the progression from Blogger to Squarespace to WordPress, with a brief sojourn at LiveJournal — and this is the librarianship-based offshoot of what began as an entirely personal thing. I love to write, and doing so helps to crystallize the ideas that chase through my head. Also, there are some brilliant people out there on the internet, writing and talking and connecting, and I want to be a part of that community, contributing whatever I have to offer.
The title of this blog, Attempting Elegance, is a blatant theft from danah boyd’s post at apophenia, Controlling your public appearance, in which she says,
Carefully crafting and cautiously managing one’s public image is a critical aspect of living in a mediated public world. Every advice column I’ve read warns people of the dangers of living online. I think that this is idiotic. People need to embrace the world we live in and learn to work within its framework. Don’t panic about being public – embrace it and handle it with elegance.
So here I am, attempting elegance. Please take a look around, if you’re interested in knowing more. On the pages, you’ll find several versions of my bio (professional and markedly less so), my CV and my resume, abstracts for, and where appropriate, links to my recent publications, and links to or Powerpoints of the plethora of professional presentations I’ve done in recent years.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’d like more information — my campus directory page has contact information, and I’m online many days as rogersjp3328 or Jenica26 on AIM, and my Twitter handle is Jenica26. For the online traditionalists among us, I can always be found via email at RogersUrbanek at gmail dot com.
